01Why Germany Is Different
Germany is one of the few major study destinations where most public universities charge little or no tuition, including for international students. That makes it one of the best-value options for Pakistani students with strong grades, especially in engineering, computing and the sciences. The trade-off is that admission is strict on academic fit, and you must prove you can cover your living costs.
02What It Actually Costs
| Cost | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Tuition | Little or none at most public universities; some states charge non-EU students tuition |
| Semester contribution | A fee each semester, often including a public transport ticket |
| Living costs | Rent is the biggest cost; larger cities are more expensive |
| Blocked account | Roughly one year of living costs, set by the government each year |
| Health insurance | Required for enrolment and the visa |
Counsellor’s tip: Our cost calculator shows Germany’s yearly total in rupees, including living costs, so you can compare it fairly with other countries.
03Entry Requirements
- Master’s: a relevant bachelor’s degree, usually 16 years of education, with course content that matches the programme.
- Bachelor’s: FSc or A-levels alone often do not give direct entry; students may need a foundation year (Studienkolleg) or one or two years of university study first.
- English: IELTS or TOEFL for English-taught programmes, at the level the university sets.
- German: needed for German-taught programmes, and very useful for part-time jobs and daily life.
Watch out: German universities check how closely your previous courses match their programme. A good grade in an unrelated degree is often not enough.

05The Student Visa
You apply for a national (D) visa for study at the German mission in Pakistan. You will need your admission letter, proof of funds (usually a blocked account), health insurance, your academic documents and English or German scores. Appointment waiting times can be long, so plan the visa as soon as you have admission.
06Working During And After Your Studies
- Students can work a limited number of full or half days a year alongside their studies.
- German skills widen the range of part-time jobs available.
- After graduating you can stay for up to 18 months to look for work related to your degree.
- Engineering, IT and the sciences have strong demand for graduates.
